The word \u201clottery\u201d derives from the Dutch phrase \u201clot,\u201d meaning fate or fortune, and a chance game in which numbered tickets are drawn at random to determine winners. In its early days, the lottery was an important tool for financing public projects in colonial America. George Washington ran a lottery in the 1760s to finance construction of the Mountain Road in Virginia, and Benjamin Franklin supported lotteries to pay for cannons for the Revolutionary War.<\/p>\n
Today\u2019s lotteries take many forms. Some are run by states, and others by nongovernmental organizations.
